Missing Moore

Sep 27, 2017

Wapo, Huffpo and “the Times” will miss the point and the moment. They have to miss the real story behind Roy Moore’s election win to run for the U.S. Senate in a special December election. The fact that Roy Moore is still standing, after the politically correct crowd, even in Alabama, has trashed him for sixteen years is a fact the Progressive Left cannot tolerate. The fact that Moore will not quit, in spite of being chastised for his beliefs and stands, is one part of the story. The bigger story is that the people of Alabama are about to send him to the U.S. Senate for a specific reason. They elected Moore over President Trump’s handpicked candidate because Moore stands singularly for the U.S. Constitution and is willing to fight to represent that idea in public life. Fox News is trying to call this “populism” which misses the point by about a mile.

I met Roy Moore sixteen years ago in the midst of his first tussle over the Ten Commandments. To my surprise, he was both genuine and kind and quite unlike most of the politicians and “leaders” we have encountered over the past 40 years. Most of us thought back then that Moore would give up the fight and retire to a church pew and a classroom. His perseverance has been quite a surprise. Now a former Chief Justice of a state Supreme Court is heading to the “club of 100”, the U.S. Senate. This should get interesting.

The reason Moore is heading to Washington is not because he is a conservative. There are plenty of those in Alabama. He is heading to the Senate because voters there are looking for more than political parties and the perpetual nonsense of the Republican elites. Moore stands for the Constitution. Voters in Alabama are looking for that kind of leadership over Republicanism. This is the message – people are awakening to the real crisis in American politics. It is a crisis over the first principles of the Constitution and an attending crisis of courage.

One final point – the Progressive Left will use Moore’s election as a dog whistle to all the children they trained to believe that America is an Enlightenment nation that prohibits religious expression in civil government. The Internet trolls of the secular state will be working overtime to remind their disciples of their radical misread of the First Amendment and the Founding. They have to do this because people like Roy Moore remind us that if you read the actual documents of the Founding, they just don’t sound like today’s textbooks.
